Running Iron? It is a term used in the old west to describe a cattle rustler who would steal a cow and change the brand. You would brand on the run (Running) and you brand with an iron...hence.... Running Iron. There are actual tools for this "profession" that allowed you to carry a brand (iron) easily and without being noticed. At one point in time, if you were caught with a running iron, you could be hung.
